Creativity with Purpose: How Team Building Can Spark Real Change

At Art is Home, our Creativity with Purpose workshops are designed to do just that: bring teams out of their routines, into a space where collaboration, imagination, and impact meet, so participants return to their work with fresh insight and renewed energy.

In today’s fast-paced, productivity-focused work environments, teams are under constant pressure to innovate, solve problems, and adapt. But one thing we’ve learned –  from working in large corporate offices to university research departments, to small art studios – is that innovation needs room to breathe. It doesn’t happen without moments of pause and reflection; nor does it happen in isolation. It thrives when people create together in a collaborative environment, and when people feel safe to experiment, make mistakes, and step outside of their comfort zones.

Why Creativity at Work Matters

Creativity isn’t just for artists. It’s a practical skill that benefits every workplace. Research shows that creative problem-solving improves communication, builds trust, and helps teams tackle challenges with fresh thinking; while reducing conflict and strengthening morale1.

Our co-founders, Heather Beveridge and Pip Wong, bring a unique blend of psychology, social entrepreneurship, design thinking, and business strategy to each session. This means your team won’t just have fun; they’ll leave with practical tools and approaches they can put into practice the next day.

What to Expect in a Creativity with Purpose Workshop

We begin by exploring how creativity fuels meaningful change. Through guided conversation and lighthearted warm-ups, participants step into a safe, almost childlike space together. This shared shift builds a common experience, helps people lower their guard, and opens up fresh perspectives often missed in the daily grind.

Here’s where the energy lifts: Whether it’s designing a collaborative mural, creating wearable art, or shaping an improvised performance, teams work side by side, blending skills into a shared vision. Along the way they navigate obstacles, deal with ambiguity, and try things they wouldn’t normally be asked to do; all the while discovering how creative actions can ripple back into their work and community.

We finish by sharing the work and celebrating small wins. Reflection isn’t just about what was made; it’s about noticing how the process felt, what shifted in the team dynamic, and how the same mindset can apply to projects at work and life in general.

The Impact

Participants often tell us that what seems simple at first can lead to surprising insights:

“At first, the task of making a hat felt like a straightforward exercise. As we worked through it, I realized how the activity nudged us to let go of preconceived ideas, think differently, and explore new approaches.” – D.C.

In another workshop with the staff of the Aerospace Engineering department at Hogeschool InHolland Delft, we explored improvisation exercises and asked participants how they could apply the lessons to teaching. They found the “yes, and” principle particularly powerful, and reflected on how to create emotional safety for their students, helping them take risks and feel less afraid of making mistakes in the classroom.

By combining creativity with purpose, teams leave with more than just a finished project. They walk away with renewed energy, stronger connections, and a shared vision for change that extends beyond the workshop and into their daily work.
