Even with our best efforts, the modern school environment or large group activities don’t always meet every child’s needs. Some children need more time, more patience, and a space where they can simply be themselves. That’s why we created Kunstmaatjes; an art club designed especially for children who benefit from smaller groups and extra support.
What happens in Kunstmaatjes?
Each week, children gather in a small group setting with an artist-facilitator and several assistants. Together, they explore different modes of creativity, from drawing and painting to collage, clay, cardboard sculptures, and many other creative adventures. The atmosphere is calm, supportive, and open-ended; and most importantly co-created by all participants. There are no right or wrong answers, and the focus is never on the end product. What matters is the joy of making, the courage to try new things, and the happiness of seeing your ideas come to life.
At Kunstmaatjes, children are encouraged to explore at their own pace, to play with materials, and to discover new ways to express themselves. Some weeks the table is covered with splashes of paint, other weeks it’s scissors, glue, and recycled treasures. Each session feels different, but the heart of it stays the same: creativity as a safe place to grow.
Why Kunstmaatjes matters
For many children, Kunstmaatjes becomes more than just an art club. It’s a place where friendships start, where confidence quietly grows, and where every child is reminded that their ideas and imagination are valuable. Parents often tell us that their children leave sessions standing taller, not just carrying artwork under their arm, but carrying pride, joy, and a stronger sense of belonging.
Where and when
Kunstmaatjes currently runs in Rotterdam Zuid, in our new studio at the Hillevliet, as well as at Buurtkamer Diamant in Delfshaven. Sessions are kept intentionally small to ensure each child gets the attention and space they deserve. Each class lasts around an hour, and we keep the environment flexible so that children can join in the way that feels most comfortable for them.
Participation is on a donation basis (around €10 per session), – and funding options available for families who need it. We believe that finances should never be a barrier to creativity, and we are happy to support families in finding the right solution.
A safe and joyful space
Every child is welcomed just as they are. We celebrate differences, embrace individuality, and focus on what children can do, not what they can’t. Our facilitators bring both artistic skill and sensitivity, creating an environment where children feel seen, supported, and free to explore.
Kunstmaatjes is more than an activity. It’s a creative home, a safe space, and a community where children can truly shine.
