HOME IN TRANSIT:
Finding home while in motion
Since October 2024, our Sketchbook Club has been a weekly creative refuge – a place where people from all walks of life come together to draw, write, reflect, and connect.
Each week, a growing community formed: people with different backgrounds, cultures, and stories, all sharing a common thread – transition. Whether re-integrating into society, navigating life as a refugee, moving between communities, discovering art for the first time, or adjusting to new circumstances, our participants found a sense of belonging around the sketch table.
Home in transit grew from these shared experiences.
Hosted at the Huidenclub in Rotterdam, home in transit was a multi-sensory exhibition that told personal stories of movement, belonging, and resilience. Through artwork, handwritten notes, and collaborative projects, we explored what it means to find “home” while in motion.

Visitors were invited to move through the space as if traveling themselves: uncovering personal journeys, touching artefacts of movement, and listening to an audio guide featuring voices from our FRENS! community sharing what “coming home” means to them.
Warmth contrasted with cold, comfort met uncertainty, and memories of belonging surfaced in the most unexpected details – a shared pencil, a stitched page, a silent auction bid.
Highlights included:
- A Silent Auction of original artworks created at Sketchbook Club, supporting both the artists and future community projects.
- The home in transit Sketchbook, a collaborative, evolving artwork where visitors could add their reflections on home-making and change.
- An Audio Guide with personal interpretations of “coming home,” recorded by Sketchbook Club members and FRENS! community.
The project was proudly funded by Huidenclub, Cultuur Concreet, and Elise Mathildefonds – who, like us, believe in making creativity accessible to everybody.
