The Khan Family: Rediscovering Creativity and Hope at FRENS TABLE

A Story of Hope and Rediscovery

The Khan family, a mother and three of her five children, have been attending FRENS Table Rotterdam since our third session. The mother had an active art practice in Syria but was forced to leave it behind when she fled her country. After several years in the UAE, the family eventually arrived in the Netherlands.

From their very first visit, the mother’s joy in creating art again was unmistakable.

Rekindling an Artistic Practice

During that first session, the mother asked shyly if we had any oil paints. Although we didn’t, she immediately created a beautiful painting using acrylics. Her dedication and skill, honed over years of practice, inspired us to invest in her creativity. We purchased a set of oil paints, and with tears in her eyes, she exclaimed:

“These are exactly the same paints I used in Syria 10 years ago!”

Since then, she has not only rediscovered her own artistic voice but has become a mentor within Sketchbook Club, sharing her knowledge of oil painting with others.

Inspiring Artistic and Cultural Exchange

The mother’s return to painting has sparked a vibrant exchange of ideas and techniques among FRENS Table  participants. Through her dedication, other members have been inspired to explore new materials, techniques, and cultural perspectives.

Her story demonstrates how creative spaces can empower individuals to reconnect with their potential, inspire others, and foster meaningful community connections.

FRENS Table: Creativity, Community, and Support

The Khan family’s journey highlights the core mission of FRENS Table Rotterdam:
