Friendship Through Creativity
At FRENS Table, it’s not just about making art, it’s about connection, community, and support. Many participants join to meet new people or simply to find friendly company. Others navigate challenges like unemployment, mental health struggles, or the pressures of caregiving.
Over just a few months, our weekly gatherings have sparked unexpected and meaningful friendships, creating a supportive network that extends beyond the FRENS table.

Thomas and Muhammed: Bridging Generations and Backgrounds
Thomas, a young international student from Nigeria, was struggling to make friends, manage finances, and keep up with his studies. Muhammed, an older resident of the Silja ship, home to over 1,000 refugees, wanted to make the most of his time in Rotterdam by connecting with others and stepping outside his comfort zone.
They met at FRENS Table, and a special friendship quickly formed. Today, Thomas and Muhammed support each other through:
- Exploring Rotterdam together
- Sharing budgeting tips
- Discussing favorite Netflix shows

Sheila and Max: Finding Belonging Through Shared Interests
Sheila and Max both joined FRENS Table through referrals. While the people who referred them no longer attend, they discovered a space where they truly belong.
Facing challenges like recent unemployment, career changes, and isolation, Sheila and Max connected over a shared love for anime. Their friendship grew quickly, and today they:
- Attend weekly gatherings consistently
- Volunteer to strengthen skills and independence
- Support each other in navigating life transitions
Their story highlights how creative spaces can foster community, resilience, and personal growth.

FRENS Table: More Than Just Art
Stories like Thomas and Muhammed or Sheila and Max show that FRENS Table is more than a creative space. It’s a place where:
- People from all walks of life come together
- Friendships blossom organically
- Mutual support and community flourish
Through art, conversation, and shared experiences, participants build connections that make a lasting impact on their lives. You can get involved with FRENS Table or FRENS Takeover to make art together!
